Charles River Laboratories International second-quarter 2010 net sales decline 5.2%

Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. today reported its results for the second quarter of 2010. For the quarter, net sales were $292.1 million, a decline of 5.2% from $308.2 million in the second quarter of 2009. Foreign currency translation reduced the sales growth rate by 0.1%. A modest sales increase in the Research Models and Services segment was offset by lower sales for the Preclinical Services segment.

Study compares denture stomatitis genes with whole transcriptome for salivary biomarker analysis

The goal of the study was to compare whole-transcriptome, mucosal gene expression in Candida albicans (a parasitic fungus that can infect the mouth) associated chronic denture stomatitis to that of healthy oral mucosa and perform proteomic analyses of potential salivary biomarkers. Denture stomatitis is a condition in which the mucosa underneath a denture becomes inflamed and sometimes painful.

Sugary drinks linked to cancer finds study

French researchers have found that drinking only a small glass of sugary drink per day could lead to a whopping 18 percent increase in the risk of cancer and a 22 percent increase in breast cancers. The team published their study titled, "Sugary drink consumption and risk of cancer: results from NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort," was published in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal.
