The California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA has announced a new collaboration with Japan-based NOF Corp. to explore initiatives in nanotherapeutics research for new drug-delivery systems.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that there was no chance the agency would attempt to vaccinate Yemen against cholera due to the fact that the disease has spread so widely there that such an effort would be fruitless. This is a U-turn on a decision made by the organization a month ago. On June 15th this year, the WHO had decided to send one million doses of cholera vaccine to Yemen in collaboration with some other partners. This was following a request from Yemen's internationally recognized government. This new decision revokes the earlier plans.
A study just published in Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics suggests that an alternative vaccine might bring clinical benefits and cost savings if used on a large scale when compared to the one currently in widest use.
About a quarter of the world's population is infected with tuberculosis bacteria, according to the World Health Organization, but only about 5 to 10% of those infected will develop symptoms. These pathogens are mycobacteria, which are everywhere, including in chlorine-treated tap water.
