"This week the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) launches a global campaign - 'It's a matter of life and death' - which aims to improve security and delivery of effective and impartial health care in situations of armed conflict and other contexts of widespread violence," Vivienne Nathanson, director of professional activities at the British Medical Association, writes in a BMJ editorial.
A new study published online today in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons finds hospitals participating in a regional collaborative of the American College of Surgeon's National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP-), achieved substantial improvements in surgical outcomes, such as reducing the rates of acute renal failure and surgical site infections.
"Implementation of infant rotavirus vaccination in 2006 has substantially reduced the burden of severe gastroenteritis among U.S. children younger than 5 years," write Paul A. Gastanaduy, M.D., M.P.H., of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, and colleagues. "Whether indirect protection (due to reduced transmission of rotavirus) extends to adults remains unclear."
Ardea Biosciences, Inc. announced that additional positive data from its Phase 2 program for RDEA594, its lead product candidate for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout, are being presented at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology hosted by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in Rome, Italy. RDEA594, a first-in-class selective inhibitor of the URAT1 transporter, treats the underlying cause of gout by increasing the excretion of uric acid in order to bring the body's levels of uric acid into a normal range.
