Scientists at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) have identified new means of fighting drug-tolerant bacteria, a growing global threat as menacing as drug-resistant microbes.
"Healthcare is now shifting towards predictive and preventative care utilizing diagnostics that allow physicians to follow the course of a disease, evaluate which therapeutic regimes are most effective, and determine long-term susceptibility and recurrence," said G. Women with eating disorders are less likely to have children than others in the same age group, indicates a study conducted at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The likelihood for miscarriage was more than triple for binge-eating disorder (BED) sufferers and the likelihood of abortion more than double for bulimics than others in the same age group.
Tumor cells are able to avoid the attack of the immune system through several mechanisms. For instance, these can secrete factors that turn macrophages -cells in the immune system- into dual action agents that contribute to the tumor progress and will protect it from immune body defenses: these become, thus, the tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs).
Oral cancer is a common condition affecting over 30,000 Americans each year. Worldwide the number falls into the hundreds of thousands, and a significant percentage of those with oral cancer end up losing teeth and normal mouth function in the absence of early cancer detection and treatment.
