How many more apples can a school cafeteria sell if the fruit is displayed in an attractive basket and placed in a well-lit area? That's the sort of question researchers from the Cornell Food and Brand Lab are exploring as part of their Smarter Lunchrooms Initiative-an effort to discover and share low-cost changes that can be made in lunchrooms to subtly guide smarter food choices.
Patients with sleep apnea may be commonly misdiagnosed with hypertension, says a study published in the March issue of CHEST, the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians. In the study, one-third of patients with sleep apnea who were physician-diagnosed with hypertension actually had "white coat hypertension" (WCH), a condition characterized by an increase in blood pressure during a doctor's office visit and normal blood press during all other situations.
Scientists at the Centro de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III have defined the key role of an immune-system receptor in the development of psoriasis, suggesting that it could serve as a therapeutic target for the control of this disease.
A new gene therapy approach that attracts and "trains" immune system cells to destroy deadly brain cancer cells also provides long-term immunity, produces no significant adverse effects and - in the process of destroying the tumor - promotes the return of normal brain function and behavioral skills, according to a study conducted by researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics Research Institute.
