Scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have isolated a previously unknown protein in muscles that spurs their growth and increased power following resistance exercise. They suggest that artificially raising the protein's levels might someday help prevent muscle loss caused by cancer, prolonged inactivity in hospital patients, and aging.
Mary Elizabeth Hartnett, MD, and colleagues at the John A. Moran Center and Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, were looking for a way to tease apart the effects of preeclampsia on the risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), an eye disease found in premature infants. Their results, and the model they developed, were published February 14, 2017, in Scientific Reports.
PharmAbcine, a specialized biotech company focused on the development of fully-human monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases, announced that is has received $6 million USD in a Series A financing. OrbiMed's Caduceus Asia Partners and Novartis Korea Venture Fund co-led the round, with additional participation from an international syndicate including Green Cross, Tong Yang and Saehan Venture Fund.
Researchers at the Salk Institute have been able to genetically incorporate "unnatural" amino acids, such as those emitting green fluorescence, into neural stem cells, which then differentiate into brain neurons with the incandescent "tag" intact.
