Inspired by a National Academy of Sciences' report calling for a new toxicity testing strategy, the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, Inc. (IIVS) and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) announce the formation of a new scientific society to promote the development and use of non-animal toxicological testing methods.

A new clinical study shows that substituting walnuts for monounsaturated fat in a Mediterranean diet improves, and even restores, endothelial function (the property of arteries to dilate in order to meet an increased demand of blood, for instance due to a physical effort). Walnuts also reduce harmful cell adhesion molecules which are associated with atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries. These dual effects enhance the circulatory system, therefore aiding in the prevention of heart disease.
A new meta-analysis of 29 randomized studies involving more than 4,500 patients with knee osteoarthritis found that intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections provided significant improvement in pain and function compared to saline injections.
