Hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases increased during the Greek financial crisis, according to two studies from Athens. The research was presented today at the Heart Failure Congress 2014, held 17-20 May in Athens, Greece.
Research has found that heart attacks peak during the winter months, and the prevailing hypothesis has been that cold temperatures stress the heart. But in 2004, researchers analyzed 12 years of Los Angeles County death certificates and found that heart attack deaths also rise in the balmy Los Angeles winters.
For the last seven years, researchers in the UPV/EHU's Department of Physical and Sports Education have been studying the hypertensive population with excess weight/obesity and sedentary habits. In a recent publication, this group has determined the state of health of this population through various key physical, physiological, clinical and nutritional markers and has separated them by sex and physical condition.
A highly touted new technology system designed to stop fraudulent Medicare payments before they are paid has saved about $115 million and spurred more than 500 investigations since it was launched in the summer of 2011, according to a report released Friday.
