The Bureau of Investigative Journalism examines what some experts are calling a serious inequity in public health spending, writing that neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) "together kill more people than maternal mortality and have a higher disease burden than malaria or tuberculosis (TB) and nearing that of HIV/AIDS. However, despite the severity of the situation, funding for NTDs is just a fraction of that spent on other diseases."
Soo Young Lee and colleagues, at Ewha Womans University, Republic of Korea, have developed a cell-permeable inhibitor of the mouse protein RANK (which they termed RRI) that is likely to aid in the development of selective drugs to treat diseases that involve substantial bone loss, for example, osteoporosis, periodontitis, and arthritis.
Research has shown that women have a different immune system from men and may respond differently to different immune disease processes.
The clinical trials aim to repair bones using adult stem cells combined with biomaterials. It will be conducted in France in the Cr-teil University Hospital Centre and the Regional University Hospital Centre in Tours, in collaboration with the French Blood Establishment.
