In a medical breakthrough scientists have found that gene therapy could be used to cure leukemia. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania engineered patients' own pathogen-fighting T-cells to target a molecule found on the surface of leukemia cells. These genetically modified T-cells were grown outside of the body and infused back into patients suffering from late-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), which affects the blood and bone marrow and is the most common form of leukemia.
Chronix Biomedical today announced that it will launch a new disease detection and monitoring service for cancer researchers at the upcoming 2010 ASCO Annual Meeting. The "For Investigational Use Only" laboratory-based testing service uses Chronix's breakthrough approach—the Chronix Apoptotic DNA Blood Test—which analyzes apoptotic DNA from dead and dying cells to identify and track ongoing changes associated with specific cancers and other chronic diseases.
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has recognized 35 endoscopy units as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy, in all settings where it is practiced in the United States. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and CDC infection control guidelines. To date, 307 endoscopy units have been recognized by ASGE.
