How antibodies neutralize SARS-CoV-2 in convalescent patients

A new study by researchers from the United Kingdom and Taiwan and published on the preprint server bioRxiv in June 2020 describes the structural basis for the neutralizing effect of the SARS-CoV-2 antibody on the virus. This also indicates a possible therapeutic molecule by identifying its binding epitope as possibly a major neutralizing site.

Opioids after surgery overly prescribed in USA and Canada

A new study covering several institutions shows that patients recovering from surgery in the US or Canada have a 50% chance of being treated with opioids. This is seven times as high as the corresponding percentage in Sweden. Within the US, the initial dosages are likely to be over 200 morphine milligram equivalents (MME) – much more than in Canada.

Joseph Roche receives grant to develop improved exercise programs for people with dysferlinopathies

The Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences today announced that Joseph Roche, assistant professor for the physical therapy program in the Department of Health Care Sciences, received a one-year, $100,000 grant from the Jain Foundation for "Developing a Multi-Pronged Strategy for the Clinical Management of Dysferlinopathies," a project that seeks to develop better exercise programs for people with dysferlinopathies, or dysferlin-linked muscular dystrophies.

Exercise and Vitamin D supplementation most effective in reducing fall among seniors

A systematic review of over 50 clinical trials finds that exercise and Vitamin D supplements are the best ways to reduce the risk of falling in people aged 65 and over. The review is published in the December 21 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine and was commissioned by the US Preventive Services Task Force.
