If a little vitamin A is good, more must be better, right? Wrong! New research published online in the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org) shows that vitamin A plays a crucial role in energy production within cells, explaining why too much or too little has a complex negative effect on our bodies.
In a study of patients with anal cancer, living in low median household income areas was linked with an increased risk of early death. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings suggest that socioeconomic inequalities may affect cancer outcomes, especially for highly treatable and curable tumors such as anal cancer.
Patients with cancer that has spread to their bones are often treated with radiation therapy to reduce pain. But if that treatment doesn't work, or can't be used again, a second, effective option now exists.
An article recently published in The Lancet reports that using an artificial pancreas system overnight can significantly reduce the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Moreover, the first clinical trial of an artificial pancreas system delivering both insulin and glucagon has shown that this system can prevent development of hypoglycemia.
