ADDF establishes Goodes Prize to recognize scientists in Alzheimer's drug discovery research

Thanks to the generosity of former Warner-Lambert CEO and Chairman Melvin R. Goodes and his family, the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation has established the only prize specifically recognizing scientists in Alzheimer's drug discovery research. Mr. Goodes—who has been open about his own Alzheimer's diagnosis—is an honorary member of the ADDF's Board of Governors.

Resolution to train public, professional responders in bleeding control techniques receives overwhelming support

Yesterday the American Medical Association's House of Delegates approved a resolution introduced by the American College of Surgeons and other medical societies to train more professional first responders (i.e., police and firefighters) and civilians as immediate responders in the essential techniques of bleeding control and to place bleeding control kits (containing tourniquets, pressure bandages, hemostatic dressings, and gloves) with first responders.

In a new policy issued today, the American College of Physicians (ACP) stated that immigrant families who have been separated at the border should be reunited as expeditiously as possible.

JBAIDS approved by the military for H1N1 virus detection tests

Idaho Technology's Joint Biological Agent Identification and Diagnostic System (JBAIDS) has been approved by the military to run tests for the H1N1 virus. Deployed across the globe, including in Iraq and Afghanistan, by all four branches of the military, the JBAIDS instrument will be used to test military personnel and their families for Influenza A, swine flu A and H1 swine flu in less than an hour.

Disabled children more like to be victims of violence

Children with disabilities are three to four times more likely to be victims of violence than children who are not disabled, with an estimated one in four experiencing violence during their lifetime, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis published Online First in The Lancet.
