Women prescribed drugs linked to birth defects not often advised to use birth control

Although prescription medications that may increase the risk of birth defects are commonly used by women in their childbearing years, only about half receive contraceptive counseling from their health care providers, according to a large-scale study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine reported in the Sept. 18 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Scientists report that organically grown vegetables have less healthful antioxidants

With the demand for organically produced food increasing, scientists are reporting new evidence that organically grown onions, carrots, and potatoes generally do not have higher levels of healthful antioxidants and related substances than vegetables grown with traditional fertilizers and pesticides. Their study appears in ACS' bi-weekly Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Health workers' misdeeds kept in secret database

NPR: "Twenty-two years ago, the federal government started keeping a list of nurses, nurse aides, pharmacists and pharmacy aides who've been disciplined by state licensing boards. It's called the Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank. But hospitals and nursing homes aren't allowed to see the database." The database was intended to be "open to hospitals and nursing homes when they hire staff and want to run a background check.

Joseph Roche receives grant to develop improved exercise programs for people with dysferlinopathies

The Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences today announced that Joseph Roche, assistant professor for the physical therapy program in the Department of Health Care Sciences, received a one-year, $100,000 grant from the Jain Foundation for "Developing a Multi-Pronged Strategy for the Clinical Management of Dysferlinopathies," a project that seeks to develop better exercise programs for people with dysferlinopathies, or dysferlin-linked muscular dystrophies.

AstraZeneca, HSCI collaborate to find new treatments for diabetes

AstraZeneca today announced that it has entered into a five-year research collaboration with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute to adapt a technique that creates human beta cells from stem cells for use in screens of AstraZeneca's compound library in the search for new treatments for diabetes.
