Breastfeeding advocates help communities latch onto a good idea

In a city where barely 20 % of impoverished women breastfeed, changing attitudes toward breastfeeding has become a matter of course for students from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Since 1995, Nursing 361 has required students to take part in a community advocacy program of their own design.

UCP2 uncoupling protein occurs mainly in cells of the immune system

When uncoupling proteins are active, mitochondria produce heat instead of ATP. This may be useful under certain circumstances, such as when an animal is hibernating. But non-hibernating animals also have them. Particularly poorly understood is the uncoupling protein UCP2. Elena Pohl and colleagues at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, show that the protein occurs mainly in cells of the immune system.

Metastatic melanoma: Involvement of immune system in response to PV-10 therapy

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a development-stage oncology and dermatology biopharmaceutical company, announced today that Dr. Sanjiv Agarwala, in his presentation at the Seventh International Symposium on Melanoma and Other Cutaneous Malignancies on March 12, 2010, commented on the involvement of the immune system in response to PV-10 therapy and its role in the "bystander effect" in treating metastatic melanoma. Dr. Agarwala's presentation, entitled "Chemoablation in Melanoma: An Update," was given in the session entitled "Unique Approaches to Melanoma Therapy."
