Ampio announces two new European patents for Zertane combination therapy

Ampio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced notification by the European Patent Office they will be awarded two new patents in Europe for the combination of Zertane with any erectile dysfunction drug of the PDE5 inhibitors family such as sildenafil, tadalafil and the likes and for a combination of Zertane with compounds that reduce the side effects of tramadol.

New award will help research into immune system differences that trigger food allergies

Adora A. Lin, M.D., Ph.D., an attending physician in Children's department of Allergy and Immunology, was awarded $240,000 to improve understanding of how children's immune systems tolerate or react to certain food allergens-sometimes triggering a cascade of side effects that can be fatal.

African Americans have double the risk of end-stage renal disease compared to white Americans

In the United States, African Americans have approximately twice the risk of end-stage renal disease compared to white Americans, despite a similar prevalence in earlier stages of chronic kidney disease. A large study co-authored by George Washington University researcher Dominic Raj, M.D., identifies factors that mediate differences in the progression of chronic kidney disease between black patients and white patients, as well as among black patients, in order to reduce the excess burden of end-stage renal disease and its complications in black patients.

Drugs that restore mitochondria function may treat Alzheimer's disease at early stages: Research

Before Alzheimer's patients experience memory loss, the brain's neurons have already suffered harm for years. A new study in mouse models by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center has found that the brain's mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, are one of the earliest casualties of the disease. The study, which appeared in the online Early Edition of PNAS, also found that impaired mitochondria then injure the neurons' synapses, which are necessary for normal brain function.
