Baby boomers driving surge in hospital admissions for alcoholism

The latest figures released by the UK's National Health Service show an increase in the number of hospital admissions because of alcohol by well over 25%, over the last six years, Kent and Medway. And alcohol caused 6,000 deaths last year.

Top-performing hospitals have fewer readmissions from all diagnoses and time periods after discharge

Checking back into the hospital within 30 days of discharge is not only bad news for patients, but also for hospitals, which now face financial penalties for high readmissions. The key to reducing readmissions may be focusing on the whole patient, rather than the specific conditions that caused their hospitalizations, according to a new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated announced today an interim analysis of data from an ongoing Phase 2 study of VX-809 and KALYDECO (ivacaftor) that showed significant improvements in lung function (FEV1) among adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) who have two copies.
