China's 'one-child policy' delayed world's reaching population of 7 billion; China to maintain policy

"The world's population is expected to hit seven billion around October 31," CNN's Jaime FlorCruz reports in his column, "Jaime's China." This is a number that would have been reached five years earlier were it not for China's family planning policy, according to Zhai Zhenwu, a professor at Renmin University School of Sociology and Population. FlorCruz writes that experts at the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China say "the policy has prevented more than 400 million births in the country."

Overload of zinc in muscles leads to cachexia in cancer patients

It's estimated that nearly one-third of all cancer deaths are caused not by the cancer itself but by cachexia-;a debilitating muscle-wasting syndrome that affects an estimated 80 percent of advanced cancer patients. Cachexia is linked to reduced tolerance for cancer therapy, poor quality of life, and accelerated death, but there are no effective treatments and its cause is still largely unknown.

Researchers find unforeseen increase in smoking-related mortality risk among East German women

The researchers found that East German women are running the risk of an unforeseen increase in deaths through smoking. According to the calculations, rates for deaths from lung cancer, which is a very strong indicator for the effect of smoking, will rise continuously for East German women aged 50 and older.

Capital, LLC, a leading global private investment firm, today announced that it has reviewed the letter addressed to the Board of Directors of Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. from BML Capital Management, LLC, dated January 25, 2011, regarding the pending tender offer for all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Matrixx by Wonder Holdings, Inc. and Wonder Holdings Acquisition Corp., both affiliates of H.I.G. formed for the purpose of acquiring Matrixx.
