Transport Minister Baroness Kramer unveiled the winning entry – a vibrating wrist band - in a competition challenging tech-savvy students to improve travel for disabled bus passengers (Friday 13 March).
The government, pharmaceutical industry, and national medical organisations need to work together to look at the harms and benefits of long-term use of cognitive-enhancing drugs by healthy individuals, say neuroscientists Professor Barbara Sahakian and Dr Sharon Morein-Zamir from the University of Cambridge in the UK, writing in a Personal View in The Lancet Psychiatry journal.
Noting that the Supreme Court last week upheld the Obama administration's Affordable Health Act, Huffington Post reporters Zach Carter and Sabrina Siddiqui write in this Huffington Post editorial that "while the president has focused on lowering health care costs at home, he has repeatedly sought to impose higher drug prices abroad." They add, "For pharmaceutical companies, that has meant steady profits, but for the global poor in desperate need of affordable drugs, those lofty prices are often a matter of life and death."
Although the measure must be passed in order to avert a government shutdown, some Republicans are frustrated because they say the bill does not go far enough in terms of spending cuts, and because it does not include controversial riders to defund the health law and Planned Parenthood.
