A clinical trial evaluates - in humans - a drug, device or mode of therapy for a disease. All therapies put into use in the U.S. go through a rigorous process of testing, culminating in evaluation of the treatment in human research participants. In order to test new treatments, clinical trial investigators at research institutions like UK must recruit participants willing to contribute to science, while often reaping the benefits of advanced treatment for themselves, and gaining access to top clinicians and the latest medical information.
The Wall Street Journal reports on Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., who says she generally supports the health overhaul efforts, but would like to see more items like higher federal Medicaid payments for her state, increased coverage for foster children and more help for teaching hospitals in Louisiana before she commits to voting for the bill — all while insisting Democrats lower the cost of the bill."
Child abuse is a serious problem that affects nearly one million children a year in the United States alone. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the US Department of Health and Human Services classify child abuse into four categories including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. None of these categories, however, clearly includes the abusive use of drugs on children. A study soon to be published in the Journal of Pediatrics investigates the malicious use of pharmaceuticals and attempts to shed light on this under-recognized problem.
