A new study led by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has determined that a gene-based method for selecting patients' doses of the popular heart medication warfarin is no better than standardized dosing methods. The study was presented today at the 2013 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.
A research group led by Lecturer Makoto Kobayashi of the University of Tsukuba Faculty of Medicine, has managed to shed light on the puzzling mechanism by which hemangioblasts become blood cells. Although hemangioblasts are the common precursor cells for blood cells and vascular endothelia that are present during the fetal period, the discovery of hemangioblasts in adult organisms has begun to garner attention from the medical world.
Contrary to popular belief, fever-reducing medication may inadvertently cause more harm than good. New research from McMaster University has discovered that the widespread use of medications that contain fever-reducing drugs may lead to tens of thousands more influenza cases, and more than a thousand deaths attributable to influenza, each year across North America.
More than a trillion dollars was spent on healthcare in the United States in 2018, with Medicare and Medicaid accounting for some 37% of those expenditures.
