Pain Therapeutics, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded over $2,000,000 in research grants by the U.S. government. These grants are planned to support the Company's on-going biomedical research for nervous system disorders and oncology. Pain Therapeutics expects to receive funding from these research grants now through the end of 2011.
Despite changes in standard treatment practice guidelines issued by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology several years ago, there has been no meaningful change in the nation's practice of opening completely blocked coronary arteries with balloons and stents in the days after a heart attack, according to a new study published in the July 11, 2011, issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
A new partnership, first of its kind for both organizations, will see Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Jasco Pharmaceuticals, LLC collaborating to advance development of an investigational pharmacological therapy that shows promise for treating both solid-tumor cancers and hematologic malignancies.
Cancer patients are often prescribed pain medications, for example during recovery from surgical procedures. However, for many cancer patients, the use of opioid pain medications during treatment can be a gateway to misuse or addiction once treatment ends.
