Arno Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing oncology therapeutics, today announced the dosing of the first patient in an investigator sponsored Phase I/IIa clinical study of AR-42 (formerly OSU-HDAC42) at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) in adult patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (MM), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or lymphoma.
Cheetah Medical, Inc., a leader in non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring systems, today announced that it has secured an initial investment of $5 million from HighCape Partners, a firm co-founded by Kevin Rakin, who joined Cheetah Medical's Board of Directors in 2013.
Semafore Pharmaceuticals today reported encouraging data from a Phase I dose-escalation trial of SF1126 in patients with relapsed and refractory myeloma. SF1126 is a novel small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), two key members of the PI3K signaling pathway that is vital to several essential biological processes, such as cell proliferation and survival. PI3K is commonly altered in human cancers, making inhibition of the target attractive for cancer therapy.
When investigating cancer cells, researchers discovered numerous peculiarities: Particular RNA molecules are present in large numbers, particular genes are overactive. Do these characteristics have a relation to cancer? Do they promote cell growth? Do they inactivate growth brakes or are they just a whim of nature?
A research team led by an award-winning genomicist at Western University has developed a new method for identifying mutations and prioritizing variants in breast and ovarian cancer genes, which will not only reduce the number of possible variants for doctors to investigate, but also increase the number of patients that are properly diagnosed.
