Nurses trained to deliver eye injections for patients with the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) administered the treatments as safely and effectively as doctors, according to a new study. The research is being presented at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology this week in Denver, Colo.
Boston Scientific Corporation today announced the settlement of three patent disputes with Johnson & Johnson (J&J). The disputes date back to 2003 and cover Boston Scientific's Jang patent and J&J's Palmaz and Gray patents, all of which involve intellectual property in the cardiovascular arena. Boston Scientific will make a $1.725 billion payment to J&J in connection with the settlement.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, has shown early promise as a potential treatment for severe depression in patients whose symptoms don't respond to standard therapies. The pilot study, at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is believed to be the first research in which patients with depression were given laughing gas.

The House voted Wednesday - by a broad bipartisan majority of 406-19 - to repeal health insurers' exemption from federal antitrust laws, the Associated Press/Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. Despite siding with Democrats, "Republican lawmakers complained … that the legislation passed Wednesday was largely symbolic and would have little real impact since states already regulate health insurers." Democrats have argued that repealing the exemption would make the industry more competitive (Werner 2/24).
