Meanwhile, a group of experts convened by the National Quality Forum has released its second annual round of recommendations on quality measures to be used in federal health programs.
SensAble Technologies, IncĀ®, a leading provider of 3D modeling software, haptic devices and dental restoration design and fabrication solutions, announced that it has received an $8 million investment to propel sales, marketing and engineering efforts for its digital dentistry product line. Existing investor HLM Venture Partners led the round and was joined by North Bridge Venture Partners, both of whom are headquartered in the Boston area, and have extensive expertise with medical device company funding.
"The decision by the Obama administration to provide non-lethal aid to Syrian rebel forces seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad is drawing fire from some in the aid community, saying it politicizes aid and violates principles of neutrality which govern aid delivery," CNN's "Security Clearance" blog reports, noting, "Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday announced the United States would give aid to armed opposition, including medical supplies and meals."
Talecris Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced today that it was granted orphan drug designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the development of an aerosol formulation of Alpha1-Proteinase Inhibitor (Human, A1PI) to treat congenital alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency. AAT deficiency is a chronic, hereditary condition that increases the risk of certain diseases, especially emphysema, which typically emerges in the fourth decade of life. Currently, there are no approved, inhaled treatments available for the treatment of AAT deficiency.
As World health experts predicted there will be more human bird flu infections in China, the U.S. Congress has stalled the funding of President George W. Bush's plan to cope with a pandemic.
