Study of mutations in cell's DNA help trace its life history

Researchers have developed new methods to trace the life history of individual cells back to their origins in the fertilised egg. By looking at the copy of the human genome present in healthy cells, they were able to build a picture of each cell's development from the early embryo on its journey to become part of an adult organ.

Novel cerebrospinal fluid proteins found in greater concentrations in Alzheimer's patients

Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, have identified a series of novel proteins in human cerebrospinal fluid. The proteins, which carry specific sugar molecules, are found in greater concentrations in patients with dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease than in patients with dementia caused by other diseases. This gives hope for new forms of treatment in the future.

Research finds link between chronic heart failure, iron deficiency

Iron plays a key role in human homeostasis. It is essential for growth and survival, and is a vital ingredient in numerous processes including erythropoiesis, oxygen transport and storage, oxidative metabolism in the skeletal and heart muscle, synthesis and degradation of lipids, carbohydrates, DNA and RNA. Important though it is, iron metabolism must be precisely controlled because iron is insoluble and excess levels can be toxic.

Dialysis Facility

Dialysis is used as a temporary measure in either acute kidney injury or in those awaiting kidney transplant and as a permanent measure in those for whom a transplant is not indicated or not possible. Dialysis facility in medicare covers outpatient maintenance dialysis treatments, training for self-dialysis, self-dialysis support services and self-dialysis equipment and supplies. In some cases, Medicare may cover ambulance transportation when the patient has End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), need dialysis, and need ambulance transportation to or from a dialysis facility.

Medicare Star Ratings

The star rating shows how well a dialysis center delivers care compared to the national average, based on Medicare data. Each dialysis center receives a rating between 1 and 5 stars, with 3 stars representing the national average. A five-star rating means a center has quality of care that is considered 'much above average' compared to other dialysis facilities. A one or two-star rating means that measured health outcomes for that center were below average. The star rating is part of Medicare's work to make data on the quality of patient care easier to understand and use. Patient survey results aren't included in the star rating.
