DNA forensic test frees prisoner with life sentence after having served 18 years

In a landmark case, a prisoner with a life sentence was freed after serving 18 years in a Florida prison, based on DNA findings presented by DDC (DNA Diagnostics Center). DNA analysis and testimony provided by Dr. Julie Heinig, DDC's DNA Forensics Assistant Laboratory Director, is credited with leading to the exoneration of Derrick Williams earlier this week. DDC is the largest provider of private DNA paternity and other DNA testing in the United States and worldwide.

PBS Newshour series examines health challenges in Indonesia

PBS Newshour's global health unit on Monday began a four-part series examining major health challenges in Indonesia, which "sheds light on the diverse nation's changing political landscape, deplorable conditions for people there with severe mental illness, the effect of rising food prices and research into a plant that could be used as a male contraceptive," the Newshour's "The Rundown" blog states.

NYT: Ethics probe involves kidney transplant center, Rep. Berkley

In 2008 Ms. Berkley helped lead an effort to block a move by federal regulators to close Nevada's only kidney transplant center, which her husband's medical practice helps run under a $738,000-a-year contract. She also successfully pushed regulators, as recently as March, to reverse a plan to cut Medicare reimbursement to dialysis centers, including the dozen her husband's medical practice owns.

New breast biopsy technique

Researchers have developed a new breast biopsy technique that could lead to decreased procedure times and reduced patient discomfort and morbidity, according to a study performed at Roberts Research Institute, the University of Western Ontario and London Health Sciences Centre, London, ON, Canada.

Dialysis is used as a temporary measure in either acute kidney injury or in those awaiting kidney transplant and as a permanent measure in those for whom a transplant is not indicated or not possible. Dialysis facility in medicare covers outpatient maintenance dialysis treatments, training for self-dialysis, self-dialysis support services and self-dialysis equipment and supplies. In some cases, Medicare may cover ambulance transportation when the patient has End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), need dialysis, and need ambulance transportation to or from a dialysis facility.

Medicare Star Ratings

The star rating shows how well a dialysis center delivers care compared to the national average, based on Medicare data. Each dialysis center receives a rating between 1 and 5 stars, with 3 stars representing the national average. A five-star rating means a center has quality of care that is considered 'much above average' compared to other dialysis facilities. A one or two-star rating means that measured health outcomes for that center were below average. The star rating is part of Medicare's work to make data on the quality of patient care easier to understand and use. Patient survey results aren't included in the star rating.
