Pixium Vision announces successful implantation and activation of PRIMA Bionic Vision System

Pixium Vision (FR0011950641 - PIX), a company developing innovative bionic vision systems to enable patients who have lost their sight to lead more independent lives, announces today the world's first successful human implantation and activation of PRIMA, its new generation miniaturized wireless photovoltaic sub-retinal implant, in a patient with severe vision loss from atrophic dry Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Cancer hijacks normal wound-healing processes

Scientists have known for the last decade that a link exists between wound healing and cancer. For instance, in a 1994 experiment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, chickens infected with a cancer virus developed tumors in areas of their body that had undergone wounding or scarring, while no tumors developed in infected areas that had not suffered wounding.

Researchers identify immune cell population that acts as body's border patrol with the outside world

So-called barrier sites - the skin, gut, lung - limit the inner body's exposure to allergens, pollutants, viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Understanding how the immune system works in these external surfaces has implications for understanding such inflammatory diseases as asthma, psoriasis, IBD, and food allergies, all of which occur at the body's barriers.

Radiation therapy with bevacizumab/pembrolizumab improves outcomes in glioma patients

Patients with recurrent high-grade glioma brain tumors have few effective treatment options and the majority of available therapies do not improve survival. Moffitt Cancer Center will present preliminary results from a phase 1 study testing whether the addition of pembrolizumab to radiation therapy and bevacizumab is safe and can control tumor growth for these patients.

Vascular Access

The arteriovenous (AV) fistulae is considered long term vascular access for hemodialysis because it allows good blood flow, lasts a long time, and is less likely to get infected or cause blood clots than other types of access. Patients who don't have time to get a permanent vascular access before they start hemodialysis treatments may need to use a venous catheter as a temporary access.
