Affymax, Inc. today announced that it has instituted a quiet period to curtail discussions with the investor community and the media in connection with the analysis of Phase 3 results for the investigational drug, Hematide, in four clinical trials (PEARL 1, PEARL 2, EMERALD 1 and EMERALD 2) which evaluated Hematide for the treatment of anemia in chronic renal failure patients.

A study led by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and recently published online by Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, indicates that women of Mexican descent may not fit that profile. In fact, results suggest that women of Mexican descent with more children and those who breastfeed are more likely to be diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Stress induced cardiomyopathy after cerebral hemorrhage has been shown to increase the risk of further brain damage. These patients can now be identified by a simple blood test, and a possible treatment for stress induced cardiomyopathy has been discovered - a different kind of anesthesia than that currently being used. A new doctoral thesis at Sahlgrenska Academy has explored these issues.
