Mederi Therapeutics Inc announced today that it has received a CE Mark authorizing the European distribution and use of Mederi's second generation of the Stretta and Secca Systems. The Stretta System is for treatment of gastric reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, and the Secca System is for treatment of bowel control disorder, or BCD. These latest systems include a streamlined user interface, significant improvements in ease of use, and are smaller, lighter, and highly portable.
As America's population ages, life spans lengthen and more individuals enroll in insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act, the need for health care professionals will increase. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that the health care market will fall short of demand by 45,000 primary care physicians in 2020. Many states do not allow advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to perform primary care duties to their full potential; however, University of Missouri researchers say APRNs can help relieve the shortage of healthcare workers and expand access to care for underserved populations.
The angiogenesis inhibitor bevacizumab (Avastin) failed to increase overall survival (OS) or statistically significant progression-free survival (PFS) for glioblastoma patients in the frontline setting, according to research led by researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Hematuria or blood in the urine may trigger a battery of tests for urinary tract cancer that are invasive and can unnecessarily expose patients to radiation, yet the procedures contribute little to the diagnosis, according to a study by Kaiser Permanente Southern California's Department of Research & Evaluation published in the May issue of the Journal of Urology.
A University of Toronto engineering team has received a major grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to continue work on designing for a waterless, hygienic toilet that is safe and affordable for people in the developing world.
