Gynaecological screening tests for cervical cancer have been available to all women in Sweden for almost four decades. Despite this, many immigrant women have a higher risk of developing the disease than Swedish-born women, according to a new study from Karolinska Institutet.
A study by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University suggests that body mass index (BMI)-the most commonly used weight-for-height formula for estimating fatness-may not be the best measure for estimating disease risk, and particularly the risk of certain types of cancer. The study was published today in the online edition of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
Pulling off a Band-Aid may soon get a lot less painful. Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Xi'an Jiaotong University in China have developed a new type of adhesive that can strongly adhere wet materials - such as hydrogel and living tissue - and be easily detached with a specific frequency of light.
There is no cure for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disorder that causes the weakening of muscles and is the leading genetic cause of infant death, but University of Missouri researchers have discovered a new therapeutic target that improves deteriorating skeletal muscle tissue caused by SMA.
In 1998, the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Report Card on Canada's Kids took a hard look at the heart health of Canadian children aged 6-12. More than 10 years later, the Foundation shines the spotlight on Ontario's kids - and will be issuing its own Report Card on the heart health of this young cohort.
