AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that new clinical data from a Phase 1b trial evaluating the company's lead product candidate, tivozanib, a highly potent and selective inhibitor of VEGF receptors 1, 2, and 3, in combination with paclitaxel (Taxol), a standard chemotherapy regimen, will be presented during the 33rd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) being held December 8-12, 2010 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
"Stockpiling antiviral flu drugs and vaccines saves lives and reduces disease in a flu pandemic," but the cost to maintain such a stockpile and deploy interventions in the event of an outbreak "is too expensive for around two thirds of the world's population, scientists said on Wednesday," Reuters reports.
Tendon disorders cost the UK economy more than -7bn a year and now scientists at Queen Mary, University of London have identified a vital component of tendons which could help treat them.
Researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet have discovered a mechanism that controls the brain's ability to create lasting memories. In experiments on genetically manipulated mice, they were able to switch on and off the animals' ability to form lasting memories by adding a substance to their drinking water. The findings, which are published in the scientific journal PNAS, are of potential significance to the future treatment of Alzheimer's and stroke.
