The inability to hear subtle changes in pitch, a common and debilitating problem for people with schizophrenia, is due to dysfunctional N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) brain receptors, according to a study by Columbia University Medical Center researchers.
Researchers at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences have received the George Bell Prize, given to the world's fastest supercomputing application, for creating software that simulates blood flow. The award, which includes a cash prize of $10,000 and is given by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is shared with researchers at Georgia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
With California lawmakers voting this month to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 years of age, questions are being raised about its impact. Although much of the discussion of the policy has centered on the 18 to 20 year-olds who will no longer be able to buy cigarettes, the real focus should be its potential to keep cigarettes away from high school students 14 to 17 years old, said John Billimek, a researcher with the Health Policy Research Institute in the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

The recently recognised global distribution of the mcr-1 gene poses a substantial public health risk to the EU/EEA. The gene is widespread in several continents and has been detected in bacteria isolated from multiple different sources such as food-producing animals, food, the environment and humans.
