Biology students and faculty members from The University of Texas at El Paso have discovered a new target for tuberculosis drug development.
A flash fire on a patient during surgery is a very real tragedy, often leading to disfigurement, disability or even death. Though surgical fires are uncommon-about 550 to 650 occur in the United States each year-their consequences are grave enough to warrant ongoing prevention education by healthcare providers.
In a pair of related studies, chemists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have identified and designed dozens of molecular "warheads" that not only can detect a key biomarker of cancer, but also could be developed into a potent new class of drug candidates for a range of diseases.
When the coronavirus pandemic hit, almost everyone at the University of California, Irvine – and colleges across the nation – had to abandon campus.
In an article published online ahead of print on Feb. 19, 2015 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, investigators at the Medical University of South Carolina and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center report findings from in vitro and in vivo studies that elucidate the mechanisms underlying the impaired ciliogenesis and abnormal kidney development characteristic of polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
