The Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario has developed a new information and awareness resource entitled "Facts about Tobacco for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People: Reasons and Resources for Quitting Smoking".
Children who undergo brain radiation therapy run a significant risk of suffering from permanent neurocognitive adverse effects. These adverse effects are due to the fact that the radiation often encounters healthy tissue. This reduces the formation of new cells, particularly in the hippocampus - the part of the brain involved in memory and learning.
A new report by AARP's Public Policy Institute finds mixed results and promising signs among state government efforts to balance long-term care (LTC) options under Medicaid. Unfortunately, according to the report, only four states spent more than 50 percent of their Medicaid LTC dollars for older people providing home and community based services (HCBS). In Pennsylvania, 90% of Medicaid LTC dollars for older people and adults with physical disabilities who have limited financial resources are steered to nursing homes.
"The notion that diseases or contamination somehow recognize geographic or political borders is a dangerous illusion. ... Fortunately, the United States has a broad, diverse, and world-class range of experience and expertise in dealing with all manner of global health issues," Nils Daulaire, director of the Office of Global Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), writes in a perspective piece in the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
