Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a muscular disease that shows symptoms in early childhood and causes progressive atrophy and eventual death. Whitehead Institute scientists report that the gene mutated in the rare hereditary disorder known as Birt-Hogg-Dub- cancer syndrome also prevents activation of mTORC1, a critical nutrient-sensing and growth-regulating cellular pathway.
Ueli Rutishauser, PhD, assistant professor of neurosurgery and director of human neurophysiology research in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai, will receive a 2014 Troland Research Award at the National Academy of Sciences annual meeting April 27.
Advances in tissue engineering and stem cell therapies will be among the research topics discussed during the National Institutes of Health's fourth Symposium on Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine, which will be held Oct. 4-5.
