A new DNA vaccine when delivered to the skin prompts an immune response that produces antibodies to protect against toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease – without triggering severe brain swelling that earlier antibody treatments caused in some patients.
The current treatment standard recommended for most women with early stage breast cancer is breast conservation therapy, consisting of lumpectomy following by radiotherapy. The purpose of the radiotherapy is to kill any tumor cells in the remaining breast area that may have been missed by the surgery.
Researchers have identified a protein in the brain that halts the progression of Alzheimer's disease in human brain tissue. The protein, known as "transthyretin," protects brain cells from gradual deterioration by blocking another toxic protein that contributes to the disease process.
Intermittent androgen deprivation is as effective as continuous therapy for men with rising prostate-specific antigen levels after primary or salvage radiotherapy, say researchers who believe the break from treatment improves quality of life.
