Although the presenting features of colorectal cancer are well known, the risks they confer are less well defined.
Among deployed U.S. service members who died of combat or unintentional injuries between 2001-2011 and underwent autopsies, the prevalence of coronary atherosclerosis was 8.5 percent, with factors associated with a higher prevalence of the disease including older age, lower educational level and prior diagnoses of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity, according to a study in the December 26 issue of JAMA.
Patients with gum disease should be told that they have a higher risk of suffering cardiovascular diseases - including myocardial infarction and stroke - and that they should actively manage risk factors such as smoking, lack of exercise, excess weight, blood pressure, and a diet high in saturated fats and refined sugars.
A Professor who is investigating how modern body imaging techniques can be adapted to answer new questions - such as the anti-cancer properties of fish oils and green tea, or establishing cause of death in forensic investigation - is to give a free public lecture at the University of Leicester.
