Africa is capable of producing enough food to feed itself within a single generation, according to "a study released to coincide with a meeting of several African leaders in Tanzania on Thursday, as well as U.N. talks on slowing climate change in Cancun, Mexico," Reuters reports (Doyle, 12/2).
In a new study published in the journal Cell, scientists have found that koala DNA is protected against attack by retroviruses by a special type of immune response, which distinguishes foreign DNA from the host genome and destroys it before it can proliferate. This finding could help us understand both how koalas survive these infections, and the mechanics of adaptive gene change.
Nursing students who had placements in UK hospitals observed that ward environments were not physically suited to caring for dementia patients and qualified nurses often felt out of their depth when trying to treat such patients. Nurses sometimes 'saw the disease, not the patient', students reported. As a result patients were not always treated with dignity and there were challenges to basic care such as nutrition.
