NYU Medical Center has begun enrolling patients in the first large-scale clinical trial of chelation therapy, a controversial treatment for heart disease widely practiced by complementary and alternative medicine physicians. The new, government-funded nationwide study will determine whether the therapy benefits people with coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.
Nabi Biopharmaceuticals today announced its first quarter financial results for the three month period ended March 27, 2010. The Company reported net income from continuing operations of $5.5 million, or $0.11 per share, compared to a net loss of $7.0 million, or $0.14 per share, for the period ended March 28, 2009.
Across the Hill, House Republicans have renewed their interest in proposals to privatize Medicare, leading Democrats to jump to the defense of the health insurance program for seniors.
Although nausea and vomiting are common in children undergoing chemotherapy, few quality studies identify absolutely the best way to prevent and treat this problem in kids, said Robert Phillips, M.D., lead author of a new Cochrane review. Phillips, a pediatric oncologist at St. James's Hospital in Leeds, England, said the main finding is the paucity of data that he and his colleagues uncovered.
In a breakthrough that will likely accelerate research aimed at cures for hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance problems, scientists have perfected a laboratory culturing technique that provides a reliable new source of cells critical to understanding certain inner-ear disorders.
