Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is the most common medical condition in pregnancy, affecting an estimated 70 to 85% of all pregnant women. Yet in a recent national survey of more than 350 nurse practitioners (NPs), only 40% of their patients reported experiencing NVP in the last 12 months, pointing to the need for greater patient and healthcare provider dialogue about the condition.
The first study to analyze the out-of-pocket costs to families for the medical care of children and adolescents with Down syndrome finds that monthly costs - averaged over the first 18 years of life - are less than $100 a month more than the costs for care of a typically developing child. The report published in American Journal of Medical Genetics, Part A also finds that the additional costs are lower when the child is older.
Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH and Lipid Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on novel treatments for inflammatory bowel disease, today announced that they have entered into a licensing agreement for the European rights to Lipid Therapeutics' lead product, LT-02, for ulcerative colitis.
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is awarding its 2010 Potamkin Prize to two researchers for their work in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), a common type of dementia. Bruce L. Miller, MD, and Lennart Mucke, MD, both of the University of California San Francisco will receive the Award during the AAN's 62nd Annual Meeting in Toronto, April 10 - 17, 2010. The AAN Annual Meeting is the world's largest gathering of neurologists with more than 2,000 presentations made on the latest advances in neurologic research.
Potential new antimalarial drug candidates are being developed through an extended drug-discovery collaboration between Australian medical research institute WEHI and Janssen Pharmaceutica NV. The collaboration was facilitated by Johnson & Johnson Innovation.
