The first evidence that onchocerciasis elimination is feasible with ivermectin treatment was published in the open-access journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Onchocerciasis is also called river blindness because the blackfly which transmits the disease breeds in rivers; it often blinds people, as well as causing debilitating skin disease. Over 37 million people are infected, often living in poor, rural African communities.
Since the advent of the California Tobacco Control Program, in 1989, the state's young adult smokers are quitting the habit in record numbers and older smokers are consuming far fewer cigarettes, according to a new series of studies from the Moores Cancer Center at University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
Global health leaders today presented new research showing that vaccinating infants against Streptococcus pneumoniae - a bacterium that causes deadly pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis - could substantially reduce death and serious illness among children in the developing world. If used widely, a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine could prevent hundreds of thousands of child deaths each year.
Diffusion Pharmaceuticals LLC today announced completion of enrollment in a Phase II clinical trial of trans sodium crocetinate, its lead compound for the treatment of cancer.
