Dr Jianguang Ji, Lund University, and Skåne University Hospital, Malmö, Sweden, and colleagues investigated data from the Swedish Cancer Registry. Researchers analyzed Swedish hospital data from 1969 to 2008. They found 1,510 patients with Huntington's disease. During the study period, 91 of those patients subsequently developed cancer. The authors said that was 53% lower than the levels expected for the general population.
Also making headlines, a group of House Democrats are pressing the White House to retain funding for mental health, and New York members of Congress are pushing to include cancer care in the 9/11 health program.
According to the Journal, the number of young people caring for parents with debilitating conditions - such as Lou Gehrig's disease, multiple sclerosis, lupus, cancer and heart disease - is "large and expected to grow" as advances in medicine and technology allow people with such conditions to live longer.
