Many adults wish to maintain their independence as they age, but health problems often require them to live in assisted-care facilities where they can be observed by medical professionals. Now, technologies developed by University of Missouri researchers could help aging adults stay in their own homes longer while still being monitored by health care providers.
The World Bank and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development recently announced that they will not help the Indian government purchase condoms to fight the spread of HIV under the third phase of the country's National AIDS Control Program, which is scheduled to begin in April, because of an alleged lack of transparency in purchasing procedures, the Financial Times reports.
Scientists at the University of Liverpool have developed a new technology which can dramatically improve the effectiveness of antibacterial treatments.
The long-term effects of teasing or harassment by their peers on pre-adolescent children - specifically, depression and anxiety - are related, in part, to the level of victimization at the end of fourth grade, as well as to how much that harassment increased or decreased between fourth and sixth grade, according to a study published in the September/October issue of the journal Child Development.
Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy (adenotonsillectomy) remain two of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States. For the most part, these procedures are safe and effective; however, risk of post-operative bleeding remains a concern.
