Researchers from the Universitat de València and the Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles have partnered to describe a biological mechanism that generates cells which are better equipped to fight off serious infections caused by the Candida albicansfungus.
Politico reports that federal officials made the emergency payment to Verizon Terremark after discovering the federal website was unable to handle sufficient traffic. Also in the news, the Maryland House is scheduled to vote on legislation to provide insurance to people who tried unsuccessfully to buy coverage through the state website.
An international team of researchers comparing recently-developed methods for diagnosing tuberculosis in children in resource-poor countries has concluded that the best test for high-risk children is the microscopic-observation drug-susceptibility (MODS) technique using two gastric aspirate specimens from each child tested. MODS detects the presence of bacteria causing tuberculosis using microscopes to detect typical growth patterns in culture broth.
Caldera Medical today announced that it has achieved CE Mark certification for its Desara Mini implant, an extension of its popular Desara brand for the treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence.
The launch of the government's Information Strategy for health and social care contains positive improvements which should benefit patients, but it would need to be carefully implemented so it didn't jeopardise patient confidentiality, the BMA said today (Monday 21 May 2012).
