"You are safe" are often the first words heard by survivors of violent acts when Forensic Nurses are present to provide care in hospitals, clinics, jails and community settings around the world. Forensic Nurses are nurses with advanced education and training, giving them the skills to deal with the immediate health care consequences of violence. On November 7-11, the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) will celebrate "Forensic Nurses Week" to recognize these nurses who provide exceptional care to victims and perpetrators of abuse and violence.
At the Oct. 2-6 microTAS 2011 conference, the premier international event for reporting research in microfluidics, nanotechnology and detection technologies for life science and chemistry, University of Cincinnati researchers will present a simple, low-cost, method for separating and safely collecting concentrated volumes of fragile prostate cancer cells.
"The global effort to eradicate polio received a SEK 1 million [about $150,000] boost today as Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, dedicated the monetary award she accepted from the Tällberg Foundation to Rotary International - a humanitarian service organization that has made a polio-free world its top priority," according to a Gates Foundation press release.
Health costs per person in Minnesota rose only 2.6 percent in 2010, about half the national average. Key factors in controlling costs were innovations by Minnesota's health plans – for example, more effective management of care for those with chronic diseases – and reduced demand for health care in a slow economy.
