Two UNC School of Medicine faculty authored an editorial in the July 15, 2010 New England Journal of Medicine commenting on results from two clinical trials using the drug Rituximab to treat small-vessel vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disease.
Conservatives are accusing Democrats of politicizing Kennedy's death to pass health care legislation, Politico reports: "So his allies on the left have made no secret of their hopes that his legacy will serve to bolster the uncertain health reform plan, with Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) even suggesting the bill be named for Kennedy.
According to a new study, children who survive cancer are at a higher risk of cancer later in life or may die early of other cause. The study included almost 900 young cancer survivors treated at Sydney Children's Hospital, from 1972 to 1999, alongside new cancer cases and early deaths. The risk of cancer was five times higher in childhood cancer survivors, the results showed, compared with the overall NSW population, that these survivors were seven and a half times more likely to die early.
Today AIDS Healthcare Foundation praised California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer for sending letters to the CEOs of eight AIDS drug companies—Abbott Laboratories, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Genentech, Gilead Sciences, Merck & Co., Tibotec Therapeutics and ViiV Healthcare—urging them to reduce the price of their HIV/AIDS medications for California and its AIDS Drug Assistance Program.
