According to a new report published Thursday, 14 different pathogens causing food poisoning cost the United States $14 billion annually in terms of human disease. The report comes from the University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute that found that out of all the pathogen-food combinations they studied, campylobacter in poultry was the single worst offender, causing more than 600,000 illnesses per year, hospitalizing more than 7,000 people and costing, annually, $1.3 billion and 9,500 quality-of-life years.
Helsinn Group and Pharmacosmos A/S today jointly announce that they have entered into an agreement for the exclusive US commercialization rights to Monofer, an innovative intravenous iron replacement therapy under development for the treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia.
Inspired by recent breakthroughs in research, today the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF) announced a major fundraising initiative entitled Research to Reality: Funding Progress. Funds raised by the campaign are earmarked to accelerate the progress of crucial research, and bring promise to reality. Country music sensation Clint Black, whose niece Courtney lost her battle with Rett syndrome in 2003 at age 16, will serve as Honorary Chair of the campaign.

Patheon Inc., a leading provider of contract development and manufacturing services to the global pharmaceutical industry, announced today its results for the fourth quarter and full year ended October 31, 2010. Revenues for the fourth quarter were $177.7 million or 0.9 percent higher than the same period last year. Excluding currency fluctuations, current year fourth quarter revenues would have increased by approximately 5.0 percent versus the same period last year.
