The genetic variability of a tumour could be a predictor for its aggressiveness: the greater the variability in gene expression, the more aggressive the tumour is likely to be. This is the hypothesis that the CNIO Structural Biology and Biocomputing Programme, led by Alfonso Valencia, is testing, after their findings on chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), now published in the journal Genome Medicine.
Improving healthcare communications and engaging patients is critical to improving safety and reducing error. That's why in celebration of The National Patient Safety Foundation's Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 6-12, patient safety thought leaders will be podcasting at the Engaging the Patient blog about how to improve patient safety and empower patients to become more actively involved in their care.
Humans and other animals carry rogue sequences of DNA in their genomes called transposable elements. To prevent passing TEs to their offspring, they employ the piRNA pathway in their reproductive organs to block the elements from being active in their sperm and eggs.
Researchers have developed a simple blood test that measures the body's own immune response to improve diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
