New England Biolabs today announced the release of the NEBNext Ultra II DNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina next generation sequencing systems. The new Ultra II kit substantially improves upon its predecessor to produce libraries of both higher quality and higher yield from a variety of sample types, including challenging ones, such as formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples and those containing low amounts of input DNA.
Scientists at Helmholtz Zentrum München have new information on what happens at the molecular level when we go hungry. Working with the Deutsches Zentrum für Diabetesforschung and the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum they were able to show that upon deprivation of food a certain protein is produced that adjusts the metabolism in the liver.
A new study dispels the age old belief that sleep doesn't get more difficult with age. The study shows that sleep quality tends to improve the older people got, with adults in their 80s getting better sleep than any other age group surveyed. The new study was published in the journal Sleep.
Using monoclonal antibodies to fight cancer is a complex, yet promising area of study. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, physician-scientists have focused their attention on expanding the current therapeutic antibody repertoire, and believe a newly developed platform will do just that - ultimately leading to new and innovative treatments for cancer patients with a broad range of malignancies.
